SNZP Bird House Revitalization
McMullan was tapped to provide the structural design for this comprehensive renovation of an historic building housing an immersive migratory avian exhibit with multi-zone humidity-controlled conditions. Its renovation included new structural framing to support a recreated ocean environment and new roof framing to support a rooftop mechanical unit inclusive of five chillers and two rooftop AHUs equating to 100,000 lbs.
The newly renovated Bird House has approximately 20,000 SF of floor area. Its inviting entrance is inspired by bird flight with a large overhang that represents a bird’s beak; the exterior curved walls with a cantilevered roof on each side of the building simulate the wings of a bird. The project is also LEED Gold certified.
