Denis J. McMullan, PE
Principal Emeritus
MS Structural Engineering, The George Washington University
BS Civil Engineering, Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland
A native of Northern Ireland, Denis established McMullan in 1988 after years of working for others in the United Kingdom and eventually the United States. Flashing forward, Denis became renowned for his structural engineering design for a broad spectrum of building types and construction methodologies, and is well known for his thoughtful solutions to complex engineering issues. Denis’ work with restoring numerous important historic canals, locks, and aqueducts allowed him to develop a competency in the field of Canal Construction Era aqueducts and locks. His research into canal technology of the 18th and 19th centuries provided the means of restoring several structures where other means of repairs had not been successful, particularly at the Monocacy and Catoctin Aqueducts for the National Park Service.
His experience also includes projects for both public and private business enterprises that represent leading institutions of higher learning, K-12 schools, hospital systems, research and life science companies, commercial and mixed-use/multi-family developers, as well as all levels and agencies of government – municipal, state, and Federal. In fact, Denis served as both structural principal and quality control principal on more than 150 IDIQ contracts for which McMullan has served as either the prime or structural sub-consultant for A/E-led teams.
Most importantly, Denis has always been acutely responsive to our clientele and has insisted that this responsiveness be modeled by everyone at McMullan. He has mentored our team to pay attention to what the client wants and needs, even if they are sometimes different. His seasoned perspective has also extended to our being diligent about meeting the scope and timeline, and more so taking great pride in making the company word as our bond.
Over the years, Denis has also been a staunch advocate for the promotion of women in engineering. Fifty percent of McMullan's engineers are women, and in 2018, Denis transitioned his ownership to McMullan Principals Colleen Nasta, PE and Douglas E. Bond, PE, SE. This enabled McMullan to achieve its WOSB certification in 2019. Part of his legacy as Principal Emeritus, recognizes how Denis engendered dozens of local structural engineers and how his focus on client service with a lens for seeking solutions remains intrinsic to every McMullan project.
